Bill Cash supports constituents over Norton Bridge rail plans – and takes up concerns with Secretary of State for Transport

Further to Network Rail writing to residents in the Chebsey area in line with the development of proposals for the main line in the vicinity of Norton Bridge and local residents being consulted on early land investigations, MP for the Norton Bridge area, Bill Cash said:
“My constituents have clear objections to the way in which they have been consulted and in particular there is confusion over what the specific proposals are and why some have received no letter at all. I support my constituents in their concerns and objections and in fact I spoke with the Chairman of Chebsey Parish Council almost as soon as Network Rail issued their letters to residents.
“The enquiries have justifiably worried my constituents who feel that this may be the first step towards Compulsory Purchase Orders and whether we were about to have a high-speed railway line running through the Norton Bridge area. We must have all the necessary information.
“A recent response to my earlier letter from Network Rail seems to suggest that this scheme relates to improving junctions, signalling and track improvements. It is stated that talks have been held with Stafford Borough Council and Staffordshire County Council and there is a timetable for consultation.
“I have written to the Chief Executive of Network Rail to arrange a meeting and I am also pursuing the matter with Staffordshire County Council and Stafford Borough Council.
“I have taken up my constituents concerns with the Secretary of State for Transport given the serious concern that these proposals relate to the existing national plans for a new high speed rail line between London and the West Midlands and high speed rail services linking London, northern England and Scotland.”
Bill Cash seeks A519 speed reduction to 40mph on behalf of Slindon residents

Yesterday, Bill Cash MP went to Slindon to meet local residents who are rightly concerned about the speed of vehicles as they travel through Slindon. There is, at present, a 50mph limit – but with the aid of hand cameras and personal observations, it is clear that people travel at speed of over 70mph, regularly causing severe danger to those who live in the village and there have been a number of accidents lately.
Cash is taking the matter up with Staffordshire County Council in detail and seeking a reduction in the speed limit to 40mph, and that measures are taken to enforce this limit in the interests of the safety of Slindon residents. Cash has asked Staffordshire County Council for full consultation with the objectors as soon as possible.
Bill Cash raises concerns over extra £2 child ticket charges on bus services

Following concerns from his constituents, local MP, Bill Cash has written to bus company, Arriva, asking why a child ticket is being denied to children travelling after 9pm on their services from Stafford.
Cash said “It has meant that local young people travelling on certain bus services, particularly the 481 bus, may have to pay an additional £2 for the bus services, because for unknown reasons they are being charged for a full adult fare.
“I have also written to Staffordshire County Council to look into this issue and to see what it can do to resolve these concerns over bus travel for young people in the area.”

In relation to the news of four deaths where people have been struck by trains on the rail lines near to Barlaston, the MP for Stone, Bill Cash said:
“I am saddened to hear of the recent incidents and have been in contact with the Secretary of State, Network Rail, the Office of Rail Regulation and the British Transport Police to look into the specific details and safety concerns relating to each case. I have asked them to report back as soon as possible.
“I am also in correspondence with the Law Commission as they are making recommendations regarding railway crossings.
“I have had a series of meetings, including by the track-side, with a number of officials over the past few years relating to rail incidents in my constituency, which have regrettably included fatalities, and I have made representations on rail safety with the Office of Rail Regulation.
“We are faced with a very serious and tragic situation and I would welcome representations from my constituents and request them to write to me if they wish to do so.”
Bill Cash MP welcomes rail regulator’s response and demands London Midland and Government act on Barlaston and Wedgwood safety fencing
Following ongoing correspondence to ensure rail safety fencing is installed at Barlaston and Wedgwood stations, Bill Cash MP said:
“I welcome a letter I received today from the Office of Rail Regulation stating that London Midland cannot prevent access at Barlaston and Wedgwood stations until they agree service level changes with the Department of Transport. We are urgently pushing for those discussions to be concluded. The safety fencing must be put up.
“I had already received a positive letter from Transport minister, Paul Clark, addressing this situation so I am hoping that the fencing can be erected soon.
“I have now written to London Midland and the Department for Transport, urging them to take forward their discussions on agreed service level changes so that we can have the necessary safety fencing at Barlaston and Wedgwood stations.”
